Mission

The mission of the “International Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Competition” is to bring forth the essence of Traditional Chinese martial arts and provide contestants with an opportunity to advance their Martial Arts skills and improve their moral conduct based on Martial Arts principles. The competition also aims to promote Chinese culture and display true Martial Arts values to the world.

Organizer

The "International Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Competition" is hosted by New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV). NTDTV will broadcast the Competition proceedings around the world.

Panel of Judges

Our panel of judges is composed of highly experienced Chinese Martial Arts experts. The Committee has also invited Masters from various martial arts systems to serve as consultants to the Competition.

Eligibilities and Requirements of the Competition

  1. Internal styles: include Tai Chi, Ba Gua, Xing Yi, Wu Dang Quan, etc.
  2. Internal style Weapons: include Taichi straight sword/Taichi broadsword/Tai Chi Fan/Other Tai Chi long weapon; Xing Yi sword/Xing Yi broadsword/spear as well as Yuanyang Blade, Qiankun Circular Blade and other internal weapons.
  3. External style: (A) Long Fist system: include Cha Quan, Hua (flower) Quan, Pao Quan, Hong Quan, Hua (China) Quan, Shaolin and other traditional Long Fist styles; (B) Nothern styles: include Mian Quan, Tong Bei, Praying Mantis, Fanzi Quan, Ba Chi Quan (Eight Extremes Fist), etc.; (C) Southern style: Hung Ga, Lau Ga, Choy Ga, Li Ga, Mok Ga, Buddha Style, Crane Style, Wing Chun, etc.
  4. External Weapons: includes various weapons such as Sword, Spear, Broadsword, Staff, etc.
  5. Contemporary wushu soft metal weapons are inappropriate for adult division.
  6. Internal style forms should be limited to 3-8 minutes and include a minimum of 45 movements.
  7. External style forms should be limited to 1-2 minutes and include a minimum of 55 movements.
    A) Long Fist will require a minimum of three types of jumps (i.e. single/double jump kick, spring kick, etc.) or acrobatics/flips (aerial cartwheel, spinning crescent kick or tornado kick, butterfly kick, etc).
    B) Traditional hand forms without acrobatic techniques such as Ba Chi Quan (Eight Extreme Fists) or Tong Bei will not require jumps or acrobatic techniques.
  8. Exception of duration or movement requires advanced approval upon registration.
  9. Contestants must be very well experienced in the category that they apply for. Beginners should not apply. This contest is for advanced martial arts practitioners only.
  10. Contestants must apply for no less than two different forms, which should include a minimum of one hand form and one weapon form. The scores will be based on the results of the two. Should two competitors have equal scores for both forms, then the winner of the final competition will be the competitor who has the most forms that made it into the final round.
  11. Age requirement: Junior Division (Male and Female): Age 10-17
    Adult Division (Male and Female): Age 18-60
    If the contestant’s age does not fall within one of these age groups, the contestant may still apply for the contest. However, the contestant must include their martial arts experience and physical condition in their application in order for the Judging Committee to consider their candidacy.

  3. Application Package:
    a) Please fill out the Registration Form (downloadable at martialarts.ntdtv.com)
    b) Please fill out the Contestant Resume Form (including personal martial arts experience and past awards). Please provide photocopies of all awards for validation.
    c) Contestants must submit two 1x1 inch color photos and a photo copy of a valid ID. A digital file of the photo is preferred.
    d) All the forms must be legible, signed and filled out in its entirety.
    e) The forms can be mailed to the Competition’s Organization Committee via registered mail. All mailed information is nonreturnable.
  4. Registration Fee:
    a) Registering one month prior to the competition date: US$80 (covers two forms), US$30 for each additional style.
    b) Registering within one month of the competition date: US$90 (covers two forms), US$40 for each additional style.
    c) On-site registration: US$100 (covers two forms), US$50 for each additional style.
  5. Method of payment: cash, traveler’s check, money orders or credit card. Make checks payable to New Tang Dynasty Television.

Competition Categories and Procedure

  1. The Competition is divided into three rounds: Preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals.
  2. The preliminary competitions will be held in Taiwan (Asia-Pacific region) as well as New York (North America). Contestants may choose to register for either site but not for both. Please refer to the registration form for detailed information.
  3. The categories for the preliminary are listed below.
  4. The Panel of Judges will determine who advances to the semi-finals. The contestants who advance to the semi-finals will be announced after the preliminary competition is over.
  5. Winners of the Semi-final round will advance to the final competition.
  6. Category for semi-finals and finals:

Award Placement

  1. Regional Preliminaries will have 40 categories. The top three winners of each category will automatically enter the semi-finals.
  2. The Final Competition will include Male and Female divisions of External and Internal Style categories. Each category will have 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze prize.
      - Gold award winners will receive US $5,000 and an exquisite hand-made Nine-Dragon sword [1] from a renowned Asian sword smith.
      - Silver award winners will receive US $3,000 and the Yitian Sword.
      - Bronze award winners will receive US $2,000.
  3. Competition will add multiple Honorable Mention Awards, which will be issued during the Award ceremony after the Finals. Each recipient of such award will get a certificate and a US $500 cash prize.

Scoring Criteria

  1. Internal styles: Movement quality and content - 60% power and coordination - 20% Structure, style, energy, and rhythm - 20%.
  2. External styles: Body posture and coordination - 40% Clarity, strength and fluid motion - 30% Content and style - 15% Focus and rhythm - 15%.
  3. Martial ethics: Contestants should formally greet the judges before and after form demonstration (such as bowing, baoquan, or putting palms together). Contestants should place the Martial Arts moral code as the top priority and conduct themselves with proper etiquette. Any inappropriate behavior will result in disqualification from the competition.
  4. Contestants should finish the movements within the allotted time. Going over or below the time limit will result in score deduction.

  • North America Preliminaries: September 27, 2008, New Balance Center, New York City, USA
  • Simi-Finals and Finals: September 28, 2008, New Balance Center, New York City, USA.
  • New York Event Site: The Armory Center, 216 Fort Washington Avenue, Manhattan.

Miscellaneous

  1. Upon registration, contestants acknowledge the validity of the Rules and Regulations for the Competition.
  2. Contestants must follow the arrangements by the Competition’s Organization Committee. The Committee has the right to revoke violators’ eligibilities and the prizes awarded.
  3. The decisions of the Panel for all rounds shall be final. The Panel of Judges does not accept any appeals.
  4. New Tang Dynasty Television is entitled to all copyrights of audio and video products made during the Competition.
  5. Contestants will take personal responsibility for any accident or injury that occurs during the course of the competition.
  6. The Competition’s Organization Committee shall have the ultimate authority to interpret the Rules and Regulations for the Competition and have the right to make any changes to them as necessary.
