The International Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Competition is part of the Global Chinese Competition Series hosted by New Tang Dynasty Television(NTDTV). One major mission of the NTDTV Chinese competition series is to help Chinese people return to their authentic cultural roots. The modern Chinese history is full of painful turmoil. After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took over mainland China in 1949, the regime has used various means to wipe out many aspects of traditional Chinese culture. Chinese Martial Arts in particular has gone through an unprecedented tribulation. Traditional martial arts masters were labeled as "superstition promoters" and were brutally persecuted. During the "Great Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976)," many of them were forced into hiding; some were sent to labor camps or prisons; some were even murdered. In addition, the CCP’s global promotional efforts of "modern Wushu" have also impeded the transmission of traditional martial arts.

As the social and cultural environment for the passing of genuine traditional martial arts was destructed , many Chinese people have even lost comprehension of the profound cultural content of martial arts. Since many of the traditional martial artists are not teaching in public or cannot find suitable students to pass on their art, many precious traditional forms have been lost or are in danger of becoming extinct. Currently, it is extremely difficult for the surviving traditional martial artists to find space to expand, develop, or pass on their teachings in mainland China. Outside of China, Chinese people have ironically become the minority practicing and cherishing traditional martial arts, one of the crown jewels of their own culture. NTDTV is now providing this competition as an opportunity for the global Chinese community to rediscover their own cultural identity. We hope Chinese martial artists from all walks of life will participate in the competition. Together, we hope to bring forth the essence of traditional Chinese martial arts values and techniques for generations to come.

Treasured Swords for the Champions: Liucai Titanium SwordGold Award: Liucai Titanum Sword (valued at US$6,000) plus US$5,000

According to "Records of Swords and Knives of Ancient and Modern Times", there was a treasured sword made in the 24th year of Jian An, in the Wei Dynasty, about 300 A.D., with its colors resembling a rainbow, and it was named Rainbow Sword. It is made from natural meteoric iron (a meteorite).

The titanium is known as "gold from outer space" and it is very costly. Titanium is lightweight, anti-oxidizing and rust free, heat resistant (over 2000 centigrade degrees), resistant to wear, and ductile. It is over three times more difficult to make a titanium sword than a common alloy sword. A specially made grindstone is needed for cutting. Titanium is a very good heat conductor and this is the biggest challenge in keeping it from deforming— a special technique must be applied.

On the request of martial artists and associations to make lightweight, and rust-free weapons, the “Jian Lu Sword Workshop” has developed titanium weapons that meet their requirements. The sword body emits seven-color light. Not only is it a perfect weapon for martial artists, it is among the favorite items of collectors as well.

Treasured Swords for Second Place Winners – Zhanlu Sword

Silver Award: Zhanlu Sword (valued at US$4,000) plus US$3,000

The blade of this sword can be angled to over 65 degrees and it will return to its original state without any deformation; its hardness index reaches over H.R.C.58. At the same time, it is extremely flexible, and durable. It conforms to the descriptions in ancient books that it was flexible enough to wrap around a finger. Its material quality is fine and dense and the craftsmanship is exquisite. It is also resistant to impact and shock.

The styling of the sword reflects the characteristics of honesty and sincerity, benevolence and vigor. It was named to express the sword makers’ respect to an ancient sword making master Ou Ye Zi. According to "Records of Consummate Skills in the Yue Nation,” the King of Yue in 496 B.C. pleaded the greatest master-craftsman at the time to make a sword for himself. After taking the order, Ou Ye Zi went upstream on Minjiang River in Zhan Lu Mountain where mountains are high and forests dense. There he found iron and cold spring water that were needed to make the sword. He settled down and built a furnace. It took him three years to make the treasured Zhan-Lu Sword, one of the 10 renowned swords from the ancient times of China. The following are descriptions of the sword in an ancient book:
"At the time the sword was made, it emits bright light that penetrated the sky and competed with the sun and the moon. Stars in the sky were outshone and the ghosts and gods wept bitterly."
It is said that the sword changes its owner many times over. About 1000 years ago, Zhou Chu, a famous general, had the sword. Then his decedents passed the sword to Yue Fei, a famous national hero who fought against the invasion of the Jin nation. After Yue Fei was murdered at Feng Bo Pavilion, the sword was lost.

Bronze Award: Yitian Sword (valued at US$2,000) plus US$1,000

Treasured Swords for Third Place Winners – Yi-Tian Sword

The Yi-Tian Sword is 54cm long with a 38cm long blade. It is made of a copper alloy. The sword was a famous one in Warring States era and the Spring and Autumn era. It was not coined by Jin Yong in his famous novel, as most people would think. This sword is said to protect its owner from demons and avoid evil influences. It was a collector’s item or a family heirloom to be handled down for generations.

The Yi-Tian and Qing Gang swords of ancient times were called "peerless double swords" and both swords were owned by Cao Cao about 2000 years ago. According to the "Popular Historical Novel of the Three Kingdoms," Cao Cao used the Yi-Tian sword to show his power and the Qing Gang sword to fight battles. He carried the Yi-Tian sword with him all the time. Cao Cao asked his follower Xia Hou-en to take care of the Qing Gang sword.
